In the Diocese of Evansville, we are blessed that the 10th National Eucharistic Congress, the first in 83 years, will be held so close to us - July 17-21, 2024, in Indianapolis.
A Eucharistic Congress is an especially powerful manifestation of the unity of the Church. During this weeklong event, it is expected that 80,000 Catholics from around the country - clergy, religious and laity - will gather to celebrate the great gift of the Eucharist, the source and summit of our Catholic faith; and to bear witness to our belief in the Real Presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. Along with the celebration of the Mass and opportunities for Eucharistic Adoration, there will be talks and catechetical sessions for people of all ages and interests. The presenters include Apostolic Nuncio and Cardinal-elect Christophe Pierre, Bishop Robert Barron, Father Mike Schmitz, Katie Prejean McGrady, Chris Stefanick, Mary Healy and many other well-known speakers.
Yet, the Eucharistic Congress is about more than just gathering for the sake of gathering. This event is intended to stoke the fires of faith and evangelization in the Church. It is about encounter with the Eucharistic Lord and fulfilling the mission He gave us to live and share our faith. How do we, as a Church, go boldly on mission to invite the world to a life changing relationship with Jesus Christ in His Church? We do so through a renewed encounter with Jesus in the Eucharist, so we can be sent on mission, “for the life of the world.”
Next year’s Congress will be the culmination of the National Eucharistic Revival, which began in 2022. The Revival has, as its mission, the renewal of the Church in the United States by enkindling a living relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. The bishops launched this effort to help address the diminishing number of Catholics who believe in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist and the resulting decrease in Mass attendance. The Eucharistic Congress is meant to be a milestone moment of the Revival; a beginning of a new chapter in the life of the Church in the United States that will lead to a more intense practice of the faith, and be a wellspring for the evangelization and ministry efforts of dioceses and parishes.
This event is the continuation of a legacy that began over 140 years ago. The first International Eucharistic Congress was held in Lille, France, in 1881. It was organized by a laywoman, Marie-Marthe-Baptistine Tamisier, in response to the decline of the Catholic Church in France following the French Revolution. The International Eucharistic Congresses, to be held every four years and which continue today, also gave rise to National Eucharistic Congresses in many countries, including the United States, as well as Diocesan Eucharistic Congresses.
Since 1895, the U.S. has been host to nine National Eucharistic Congresses and two International Eucharistic Congresses (1926 in Chicago and 1976 in Philadelphia). The last National Congress was held in Minneapolis-St. Paul in 1941. The accounts of the nine National Congresses display the growth of the Catholic Church in the United States; they also manifest Eucharistic Congresses as singular forces for that growth.
It is believed that the 2024 Congress will likewise spur a new springtime of the Catholic faith, nationally as well as locally. I hope that parishioners from all over our Diocese will take advantage of this unique spiritual and formational opportunity, especially when it will be so close to home. Let us pray that, inspired by the Holy Spirit, the Catholics who come from all over the U.S. to Indianapolis next year, as well as parishioners who will attend our own Eucharistic Congress, will experience a transformative encounter with our Eucharistic Lord. Together, let us ask Him to revive our hearts, our Church, our diocese and our world, launching us into a new chapter of missionary faith.
