Opening doors to more resources

A PLACE FOR ALL

One of the biggest challenges that teachers face involves navigating the diverse needs of their students. We have recognized that each child will need different and unique methods of teaching. Moving forward, we are striving to focus on the growth aspect of each child's education, aiming to make sure each child shows growth over a period of time regardless of the level or grade they are in. Teachers across the Diocese of Evansville are navigating and constantly evolving their classrooms to try and reach their students. Many change the style or presentation of material, but is that really enough?

As Executive Director of Marian Educational Outreach, I had a dream to provide every diocesan staff member with professional development that was centered around why we should be more inclusive and how to differentiate in the classroom. Teachers say to me, “I just don't know how,” and “I do not have the resources and knowledge to teach all levels.” This is concerning and needs to be addressed.

I found myself asking these questions:

  • Do teachers know exactly what differentiation means?
  • How do teachers manage a classroom full of students who are working at different paces and levels?
  • Can we ensure that each child is growing and learning to their fullest potential?
  • Do schools have material, adequate staffing and access to get resources they need?

Marian Educational Outreach is invested in making a change for all schools. MEO is partnering with the University of Notre Dame’s professional experts on inclusive education and providing professional development for every diocesan school next school year. Schools are invited to join five sessions that will begin in the fall. Marian Educational Outreach is putting focus on making sure we reach all teachers so that every diocesan school is equipped with more resources to meet the needs of their students.

Projects like this help our diocesan teachers deepen their understanding and knowledge of how to make sure that all of our children are receiving quality education. It is important to acknowledge changing needs in the classroom. This project will result in more schools becoming equipped with needed resources to be able to meet the needs of their students.

I am fulfilled by seeing teachers who are making an effort to reach each child who walks into their classrooms each day. Marian Educational Outreach is committed to providing opportunities for students with unique learning needs to reach their highest potential while remaining in the Catholic school system of the Diocese of Evansville. This work is essential in making sure that all children are embraced and loved just as God made them.
