BECAUSE I AM CATHOLIC!
Editor’s note: Th Spanish translation of this column appears below the English. I would like to echo the words of Pope Francis; which he has used more than once when referring to our Church: “Our Church has to be a field hospital, a place where we can welcome each other and those who have been hurt on the road, those who suffer, a place that knows how to accompany in illness, in pain, and loneliness.”
We, as Catholics, are called to take advantage of the many opportunities that we have in our daily lives to discover the face of God; in our family, at work, in our neighborhood or wherever God is taking us.
Every day is full of the presence of God. Through these moments, we can create an intimate relationship with Him; but we need to be open and be willing to find and welcome Him in our lives. Each space of our life is an opportunity to meet with the living God. We will not be able to discover the Face of God in others if we do not have an intimate relationship with Him. We can cultivate this friendship in many ways. Prayer is one of them. Our Church calls us to be praying men and women; to listen in the silence and find God’s plan in our daily lives.
Belonging to the Catholic Church has been a blessing throughout my life because, as a Catholic, I’m called to live in community regardless of the physical places in which I have lived. I have been called not to act only as an individual, but as a loving member of the community that God is giving me. It has not been easy many times; but with the grace of God, everything is possible. Being Catholic calls me to be better every day, not only for my salvation and personal growth, but for the common good; starting with my family, my workplace and my neighborhood where God has led me to live. I’m convinced that accomplishing successful projects without the vision of the common good result empty projects. Being part of the Catholic Church makes me aware, of course, that our community is imperfect. This Body of Christ is not perfect; we are humans, with gifts and imperfections. But in our weaknesses, God calls and invites us to be part of this precious project. Our Church is the place; our hospital, to heal our weaknesses.
I would like to conclude with the words of Saint Therese, and I would like to ask her for her intercession for us, that we try to live this phrase: “In the Heart of my Mother the Church, I will be Love.”

Me gustaría hacer eco de las palabras del Papa Francisco que usa más de una vez cuando se refiere a nuestra Iglesia “Nuestra Iglesia tiene que ser un hospital de campaña. Un lugar donde podemos acogernos unos a otros y a aquellos que el camino ha herido, a los que sufren, un lugar que sabe acompañar en la enfermedad, en el dolor y en el olvido.”
Nosotros como Católicos vivimos y estamos llamados a aprovechar las muchas oportunidades que en nuestra cotidianidad tenemos para descubrir el rostro de Dios, ya sea, en la familia, en el trabajo el vecindario o sea a donde Dios nos va llevando.
Cada día está lleno de la presencia de Dios para relacionarnos con El, solo basta que lo deseemos y que estemos dispuestos y abiertos para verlo, encontrarlo y acogerlo. Cada espacio de nuestra vida es una oportunidad para el encuentro con el Dios vivo. No podremos descubrir el Rostro de Dios en los demás si primero no tenemos una relación íntima con El. Esta relación la podemos cultivar de muchas maneras y entre ellas esta la oración. Nuestra Iglesia nos llama a ser hombres y mujeres orantes, hombres y mujeres de escucha, solamente mediante esta relación íntima vamos a encontrar el plan de Dios en nuestra vida diaria.
Pertenecer a la Iglesia católica ha sido una bendición al largo de mi vida porque he sido llamada a formar “Comunidad” sin importar el lugar físico en el cual me ha tocado vivir, ser católica me ha llamado a no a actuar de forma individualista, pero a tratar de pertenecer a una comunidad, no ha sido tarea fácil muchas veces, pero con la gracia de Dios todo es posible. Ser católica me llama a ser mejor cada día, no solamente por mi crecimiento personal, pero por el bien común, empezando por mi familia, mi trabajo, mi vecindario en la Comunidad donde Dios me ha llevado a vivir. Estoy convencida que lograr proyectos exitosos, sin la visión del bien común son proyectos que al final dejan al ser humano en el vacío. Pertenecer a la Iglesia Católica me hace consciente por supuesto que nuestra comunidad es imperfecta, una comunidad que está compuesta por humanos, con dones y defectos pero que Jesús nos invita a sanar estas debilidades dentro de esta comunidad fraternal que nos ha regalado esta comunidad que cuando caemos nos dan una mano para levantarnos con amor y respeto.
Me gustaría concluir con las palabras de Santa Teresita del Niño Jesús y me gustaría pedir a ella su intercesión para vivir realmente esta frase “En el Corazón de mi Madre la Iglesia, yo seré el Amor.”
