On Feb. 29, John Wargel of St. James School in Haubstadt was named the February St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Outstanding Educator by the Diocese of Evansville Catholic Schools Office.
Wargel is the sixth educator to receive the award since its inception in 2023. He’s in his 30th year of teaching for the diocese.
His nominator said, “John wears many hats at St. James School. Students leave his classroom each afternoon with a smile just as they enter in the morning. Mr. Wargel picks them up early each morning, goes above and beyond in the classroom of his expectations, and is always available to assist his colleagues when they need coverage. John is unparalleled in his relationship building with his students, rapport with families, and kindness to his peers.
Wargel’s nominator continued, “Mr. Wargel prepares Mass schedules weekly and is an expert in incorporating both faith and technology into his classroom. Parents and students alike look forward to their 5th grade year. … I know I can count on him and his initiative. He is an integral part of the St. James community and the success we have.”
Each month, deserving diocesan teachers are nominated by their colleagues, and a committee selects one winner. All teachers in the diocese are eligible to receive the award.
