I started discerning my vocation when I was very young. My calling ultimately started at home. It became clearer the older I got, but it became obvious when I started to serve Mass and volunteer around my parish.
As I discerned, my parents were the first to show support and encouragement for my calling, and they were always there for me. My pastor, Father Ryan Hilderbrand, through his example of living out the priesthood, helped to re-spark my vocation when I began to run from it. Two friends have also been there every step of the way, both in the joys and trials of life and discernment, to whom much credit is due.
I wasn’t surprised by their support, because they have all striven to live holy lives. I think of the words of St. Pio of Pietrelcina who said, “You need to hold fast to two virtues: kindness toward your neighbor and humility toward God.” Those who have supported me have taken those two virtues to heart in some way and it has made all the difference.
If you know someone who is discerning, it would be helpful to tell them that you see the call in them. The slightest encouragement can make all the difference in the world. Most importantly, pray for them. Ask the Blessed Mother to help them find the way they are called to serve.
