Mater Dei High School announced July 18 that head baseball coach Adam Schiff is stepping down after one season.

In the press release from the school, Schiff said “it was a tremendous honor” to return to Mater Dei and coach the baseball team this past season. He said he believes they succeeded in building a foundation that future teams can build upon.

“I am extremely grateful for these players, coaches and staff who allowed me to be their coach this year,” Schiff said in the press release. “Unfortunately, my role within the new Amcor company has undergone significant changes following the recent merger between Amcor and its legacy Berry Global. This new role will not allow me to coach the MD baseball team and give the program the time and attention it deserves. Mater Dei coaches have a track record for leaving the program in a good position to continue to thrive. I hope that I have accomplished this.”

Schiff returned to his alma mater in 2024 and made an immediate impact during the 2025 baseball season. Under his leadership, Mater Dei advanced through an exciting postseason run that culminated in the program’s first state finals appearance in years.

“Coach Schiff brought strong leadership, a commitment to our student athletes and a love for Mater Dei,” Mater Dei Athletic Director Sam Fleming said. “Reaching the state finals in his first year is a testament to how much the players bought into his impressive program.”

A Mater Dei Hall of Famer and former collegiate player, Schiff brought a deep passion for the game and strong ties to the Mater Dei community. Schiff’s son Palmer, a 2025 graduate, will continue his baseball career at Vincennes University. Schiff’s younger son Spencer, an incoming sophomore, will remain active in the program, the press release says.

The search for a new head coach will begin immediately, as Mater Dei looks to carry forward the program’s positive momentum and tradition of excellence, according to the press release.
