Special to The Message
The St. Meinrad Alumni Association will host its 12th annual St. Meinrad Day of Service March 14.
The day of service will be in 12 cities. In Evansville, service projects will take place at Sleep in Heavenly Peace, 1167 S. Green River Road, Evansville, IN 47715, and Corpus Christi Parish, 5528 Hogue Road, Evansville, IN 47712.
The Day of Service is an opportunity for alumni of St. Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology, as well as oblates, friends and area residents, to set aside time to serve their communities. Volunteers do not need to be alumni of St. Meinrad and everyone is welcome to participate.
Since the inaugural year in 2014, the day’s theme has been Ora et Labora (pray and work). Along with the service activities, prayer is planned into the day through celebrating Mass or praying the Liturgy of the Hours, including a special prayer written by Benedictine Archabbot Kurt Stasiak.
At Sleep in Heavenly Peace, registration for the event will be open at 7:30 a.m. CDT, with Mass beginning at 8 a.m. Volunteers will prepare lumber for construction and assemble custom-made wooden beds for needy children. The team will build 40-50 beds. All ages are welcome and some jobs can be done by various ages and abilities. Any questions or registration assistance for this site can be directed to site coordinator Darren Sroufe at dsroufe@saintmeinrad.edu.
At Corpus Christi, the day will begin with registration at 7:30 a.m., CDT, with Mass beginning at 8 a.m. There will be coffee and doughnuts following Mass. The service project will begin at 9 a.m. and end with lunch at noon. Volunteers will continue work on the outdoor Stations of the Cross, Marian grotto and future meditation trail. Leaf rakes, garden rakes, shovels and wheelbarrows will be needed. For more details, contact site leader Craig Blessinger at ctblessinger@gmail.com.
There is no cost to participate.
