I recently reflected on a message describing Easter as the ultimate victory of hope and love over death and despair. This sentiment was beautifully captured by Pope Francis, who stated, “The Resurrection is the hope that changes everything. It’s a hope that never fades, no matter the darkness we face.” Easter reminds us that even when all seems lost, the Resurrection occurs. It is a testament that Christ understands our daily struggles and provides exactly what we need, often before we even realize it ourselves.
This sense of hope is precisely what calls me to service through Catholic Charities. Every day, we witness the profound ways Christ works through our staff and volunteers to provide help and hope in times of uncertainty and suffering. Whether we are providing counseling for those grieving a loved one, helping a child develop coping skills for anxiety, or assisting an individual struggling to cover rent following an unexpected medical bill, hope remains at the core of everything we do.
Recently, a woman reached out to us in desperate need of mental health support after being told she would have to wait months for an appointment elsewhere. Fortunately, we were able to schedule her for counseling the following week. Even before her first session began, she expressed a renewed sense of hope.
While we strive to respond to every need as quickly as possible, the requests for our emergency financial assistance program often outpace our available resources. Yet, even when we cannot accommodate a request immediately, our staff is available to listen and problem-solve. We are frequently told that we were the first people to truly listen. In these times, we provide the person with the hope that comes from simply knowing someone cares.
As we celebrate this Easter, I invite you to consider how you can put your faith into action and provide hope to those around you. You might reach out to those who are alone or isolated, donate to organizations supporting those in need, volunteer your time, perform random acts of kindness, or simply pray for those facing hardships.
Let us continue our journey of spreading hope and serving those in need as we celebrate this Easter season. As we are reminded in Psalm 40:5a, “Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.”
