Special to The Message

Editor’s note: Bishop Joseph M. Siegel addressed graduates of the four diocesan Catholic high schools during their Commencement Ceremonies on May 23-24. He has provided us with the following message for all 2021 graduates across our 12 counties. We join him in sending congratulations and prayerful best wishes to all of our 2021 graduates.

Dear Members of the Class of 2021,

Congratulations on your graduation!

None of us could have imagined that the last two years of your high school career would have been lived in the midst of a pandemic, with its terrible effects on so many people and the necessary, yet difficult restrictions that have imposed limitations on every aspect of daily life.  Yet, you have persevered through it all, and we give thanks to God that we are able to gather together to celebrate the successful completion of your secondary education at your various schools.

On Pentecost, which we celebrated just a couple of weeks ago, we recall how the Holy Spirit came down upon Our Blessed Mother and the Apostles and bestowed his seven gifts on them, transforming the Twelve from confused and fearful men into bold and courageous witnesses of Christ, and empowering them to bring the Gospel to the ends of the earth.  It is the same Holy Spirit that fills the hearts of each of you, the graduates of 2021, and sends you forth from your schools to be witnesses of Jesus Christ in the world. Now you have the responsibility to share with others what you have learned and experienced in your schools and parishes. You are to testify to the truths you have encountered and embraced through your religious formation. The Holy Spirit sends you, as he sent the apostles, into a world that is desperately searching for purpose and meaning, yet so often in the wrong places. You are sent with the peace of the Risen Christ and in the power of the Holy Spirit so that you can act boldly with faith, hope and love. Wherever you go from here, whether to college, military service or the workforce – you are to witness to the truths of our faith.

We receive the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit sacramentally in baptism, and Confirmation, but using those gifts well is a life-long effort. You will need these gifts as you face the difficulties and challenges that are part of everyone's life. Christ promises that he will always be with you as long as you remain close to him. Praying each day, coming to Mass each Sunday and Holy Day, receiving the sacrament of reconciliation regularly, getting involved in campus ministry or various church activities, continuing to learn about your faith – these are the ways to keep Christ at the heart and center of your life.  As you graduate and begin a new chapter in your life, I pray that you open your hearts once again to be touched by the Spirit, that your faith may be inflamed and reinvigorated so that you may be a powerful influence for good no matter where you go.

Through the intercession of Mary, the Mother of God, patroness of the Diocese of Evansville, and St. Joseph, in this year dedicated to him, may the Lord Jesus, who has accompanied you through these past four years to graduation, continue to bestow on you every grace and good gift you will need to live a full and meaningful Christian life as His disciples in the world.

Again, congratulations and may God bless and guide you always.

Especialmente para The Message.
