On March 31, Bonita Spencer, religion teacher for grades 5-8 at St. Bernard School in Rockport, was named the March St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Outstanding Educator by the Diocese of Evansville Catholic Schools Office. Spencer was surprised by Diocesan Superintendent Michelle Priar, Associate Superintendent Kari Ford and School Support Administrator Lynde Anquillare, who presented her with a certificate and a small gift.

Spencer is the 15th educator to receive the honor since its inception in 2023. She is in her 26th year of teaching at St. Bernard. She currently teaches religion for grades 5-8 and serves as the early learning coordinator and after-school coordinator.

A nominator said Spencer has spent the entirety of her 26-year teaching career at St. Bernard Catholic School in a variety of teaching roles. In 2023, the nominator stated that Spencer transitioned into the role of Early Learning Coordinator, where she “helped maintain our highly-accredited preschool and Pre-K program.” In addition to holding this title, Spencer also teaches middle school religion and is currently subbing in 6th Grade English Language Arts. She also leads the school’s Builders Club, which meets monthly and teaches students the importance of service to their school and community.

“Bonni is always willing to do what is in the best interest of the school and our students,” her nominator said. “She assists with summer cleaning projects, including stripping/waxing our floors in the summer months. You will often find Bonni breaking down boxes, taking out trash, and making sure our school is looking its best. She is a true servant leader and a model for all teachers. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this honor than her!”

Each month, deserving teachers are nominated by their colleagues, and a committee selects one winner. All teachers in the diocese are eligible to receive the award.
