Build Hope with Us

Special to The Message

Especially during this Jubilee Year of 2025, we are all called to be Pilgrims of Hope, a hope rooted in our faith in Jesus Christ. As a concrete way of fulfilling this Jubilee imperative, the Diocese of Evansville is participating in a partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Evansville to build a home for a family in need.

This initiative offers a meaningful and tangible way for our whole local Church, our Diocesan offices and parishes together, to fulfill the Lord’s commission to serve those in need by providing safe, affordable housing for a struggling family.

The future homeowner for the Diocesan Jubilee Build is Mi’Kyla and her young daughter. Their home will be built in the 1500 block of Florence Street in a neighborhood with several other Habitat houses.

An official groundbreaking for their home is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9.

We are so grateful to all of the parishes and institutions that have responded so far with pledges of sweat equity and monetary contributions towards our $100,000 goal. Our diocesan contribution of $50,000, plus the parishes and schools that have partnered with us thus far, brings us to $67,000. With future partnerships, we will reach our goal for the build.

In addition to financial support, all are invited to join the diocesan office staff in a pledge of “sweat equity” toward the build. Consider organizing a parish service day — maybe make it a friendly competition with a neighboring parish to see who can donate more sweat equity hours!

As you know, providing shelter for those who are without proper housing is a corporal work of mercy, and this Jubilee Year initiative offers a powerful opportunity to fulfill that obligation together as the Church of Evansville.

With your assistance, volunteer work will continue through the final months of the Jubilee Year, and organizers anticipate the completed home will be blessed in early 2026.
