Following consultation with the Bishops of the Province of Indiana, I hereby decree that the dispensation from the obligation to participate in Mass on Sundays and holy days, which I previously granted on 12 March 2020 to the faithful of the Diocese of Evansville and travelers present in the Diocese of Evansville, ceases effective at midnight on 11 June 2021, the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.
In accord with canon 1247 of the Code of Canon Law, “On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are obliged to participate in the Mass. Moreover, they are to abstain from those works and affairs which hinder the worship to be rendered to God, the joy proper to the Lord’s day, or the suitable relaxation of mind and body.”
