Gratitude for the Gift of Faith
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides. Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for a day is its own evil” (Matthew 6:33-34).
What do you worry most about? God invites us to seek his help with our concerns. A conversation with him is effective prayer, trusting and listening to his response is wisdom.
The 33rd chapter of Jeremiah records turbulent times in Jerusalem before the Babylonian conquest. The prophet Jeremiah is imprisoned by King Zedekiah for being a divine spokesman in a polarized government with spiritual collapse. God acknowledges this devastation but promises a plan for hope and healing. Jeremiah heard from the Lord about the coming of a righteous “Branch” from the Davidic Kingdom who would bring an eternal covenant. The message concluded with a call to prayer in a time of national crisis. “Call to me, and I will answer you; I will tell you great things beyond the reach of your knowledge” (Jeremiah 33:3).
The call to evangelize may be challenging if you lack an understanding of the deposit of faith entrusted to the apostles and passed on to us. God provides everything you need through the power of the Holy Spirit … please ask! Life was never meant to be lived without God. We live in a constantly changing culture that defies truth, it is polarized, political and in spiritual collapse … much like the days before the destruction of Jerusalem.
Twelve years ago, we moved from our home of 39 years in Vincennes to Morgantown, Indiana. I enjoyed a long walk through town on my last day and watched the sun set on a beautiful June evening. I was reflecting on the memories and blessings from the beautiful place where we began our marriage and raised our family. Trusting God — I had no fear or doubt about this decision. The unknowns ahead were concerning, but with faith, all things are possible.
I loved my daily walks in Vincennes. This was a time for conversations with God, we made plans together, and solved life’s problems during those urban treks. I never worried about the future of my country in the 39 years we spent raising our family in this community. I was excited to enjoy our grandchildren in our new home. I wasn’t worried about the world they would grow up in, either, because I would be there to help them enjoy life. Things have changed. The country is divided in both political and spiritual matters. Protecting the innocent and vulnerable is only possible if we show them how to strengthen their relationship with Jesus … the mission of every believer.
I captured a photo of the sun setting during my last stroll through Vincennes. The image reminds me that God is with us — enjoy his presence in your life — take pictures of those moments — share stories with those around you — the brokenness of life will be healed if those who believe will share the reason for their belief. God gives us free will, and everyone plays a part in his plan for restoration and healing. Listen for his voice. He will tell you great things! Amen!
