Local women religious orders receive grants

SPECIAL TO THE MESSAGE

The Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand and the Sisters of Providence of St. Mary-of-the-Woods have received grants from the nonprofit organization Support Our Aging Religious. The grants are among 74 grants totaling $1,302,235 that SOAR! awarded recently to assist aging Catholic sisters, brothers and priests in religious orders.

The Sisters of St. Benedict received a grant to finance the purchase of medical equipment. The grant to the Sisters of Providence will finance the renovation of an area to care for sisters with dementia.

A group of concerned lay people formed SOAR! in 1986 to help ensure the financial stability of Catholic religious congregations in the care of their elderly and infirm members. In the past 30 years, SOAR! has awarded 1,264 grants totaling more than $18 million to congregations across the U.S.

The organization is separate from the annual retirement collection coordinated by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. For more information or to make a donation, visit www.soar-usa.org.
