As a result, The Message is happy to publish the following message to 2020 graduates from Bishop Joseph M. Siegel. The Spanish translation appears below the English version of Bishop Siegel’s message.
Dear graduates, I am happy to have the opportunity to offer you my congratulations and to share some reflections as you complete your years of study and formation at your Catholic high schools.
Certainly this is not the way any of us planned to celebrate your commencement, nor did you foresee completing your senior year by sheltering at home and extended learning.
And I am sure you are disappointed you were not able to participate in the various rituals and events that normally mark the conclusion of senior year at your schools.
In the future, when people look back at the class of 2020, how do you think you will be remembered? You may suppose that you will be remembered mainly as the students who graduated in the pandemic year and all that entailed. However, it is my hope and expectation that we will think of you for much more than that. Namely, I hope we will think of what you, the class of 2020, have accomplished in your lives, how you were sent forth from your schools empowered by your faith and your Catholic education, and made a profound difference for good in your colleges, the military, your work places, and eventually in our community, our nation and beyond.
I believe this is possible because your Catholic high schools have taught you more. Yes, you have been instructed well in the usual subjects of literature, math, science, history and all the rest, but the “more” of your Catholic education has been learning what it means to be a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ and applying that in your life. This entails being persons of integrity, generosity and compassion. It includes making moral and ethical choices and life decisions.
Empowered by the gifts of the Holy Spirit and all that has been shared with you at your schools, you are being sent forth as missionary disciples. As Jesus’ bold and courageous witnesses, you are commissioned to share his love, truth and mercy with those you will encounter each day. To accomplish this you need to stay close to Christ. Whatever the future holds, always deepen your relationship with the Lord through your daily prayer, Sunday Mass and the regular practice of your faith. I hope you will be involved in campus ministry, chaplaincy programs or parish ministries and activities.
For our diocese’s 75th anniversary celebration, we chose the motto – “Christ yesterday, today and forever.” This quote from Scripture is a reminder that the same Jesus who has walked with us in the past sustains us now, and will also be guiding and protecting us in the days to come. May your faith always instill in you the inner peace and joy of experiencing the Lord’s presence in your lives, at all times and no matter where you are.
Of course, your years of Catholic education would not have been possible if not for your parents. Please join me in thanking them, along with your parishes, for making the commitment and the sacrifices to help provide you with a Catholic education. I also want to express my gratitude to your priests, the faculties and staffs of your schools for working so hard to fulfill your schools’ missions of forming and educating you as disciples of Jesus Christ.
So, dear graduates, I hope your class will stand out, not because you happened to graduate the year of a world-wide pandemic, but because of the impact you make as faithful and committed disciples of Jesus Christ, infusing the world with his presence through your words and actions, making wherever you are a better place because you have shed the light of the Gospel there.
It is my prayer that through the intercession of Mary, the Mother of God, patroness of our diocese, the Lord Jesus will continue to bestow on you every grace and good gift you will need to live full and meaningful Christian lives as you go forth as his disciples in the world.

Nota del Editor: La ola de COVID-19 ha impactado significativamente las graduaciones de la escuelas secundarias en la Diócesis de Evansville. Como resultado, The Message está feliz de publicar el siguiente mensaje del Obispo Siegel a los graduados del año 2020.
Queridos graduados, estoy feliz de tener la oportunidad de ofrecerles mis felicidades y de compartir algunas reflexiones al completar sus años de estudio y formación en sus escuelas secundarias católicas.
Ciertamente esta no es la forma en la que ninguno de nosotros planeó celebrar su ceremonia de graduación, ni tampoco ustedes anticiparon completar su año escolar refugiándose en su hogar y con enseñanza extendida.
Y estoy seguro de que están desilusionados por no haber podido participar en los varios rituales y eventos que normalmente marcan la conclusión del último año en sus escuelas.
En el futuro, cuando la gente mire hacia atrás a la clase del año 2020, ¿cómo piensan que serán recordados? Ustedes pueden suponer que serán recordados principalmente como los estudiantes que se graduaron en el año de la pandemia y todo lo que esto conlleva. Sin embargo, es mi esperanza y expectativa que nosotros pensemos en ustedes por algo mucho más que eso. En concreto, yo espero que nosotros pensemos en lo que ustedes, la clase 2020, ha logrado en sus vidas, como ustedes fueron enviados de sus escuelas empoderados por su fe y su educación católica, y que hagan una diferencia profunda para el bien en sus colegios, el ejército, sus lugares de trabajo, y eventualmente en sus comunidades, nuestra nación y más allá.
Yo creo que esto es posible porque sus escuelas católicas les han ensenado más. Sí, ustedes han sido bien enseñados en las materias usuales de literatura, matemáticas, ciencia, historia y el resto, pero lo “más” de su educación católica ha sido aprender lo que significa ser un discípulo fiel de Jesucristo y aplicar esto en sus vidas. Esto supone ser personas de integridad, generosidad y compasión. Esto incluye hacer elecciones y decisiones de vida morales y éticas.
Empoderados por los regalos del Espíritu Santo y todo lo que ha sido compartido con ustedes en sus escuelas, ustedes están siendo enviados como discípulos misioneros. Como los testigos osados y valientes de Jesús, ustedes están comisionados a compartir su amor, la verdad y la misericordia con aquellos a quienes encuentren cada día. Para llevar esto a cabo ustedes necesitan estar cerca de Cristo. Sea lo que fuere que les depare el futuro, siempre profundicen su relación con el Señor a través de la oración diaria, la Misa del domingo y la practica regular de su fe. Yo espero que ustedes participen en el ministerio de la universidad, los programas de capellanía o el ministerio y las actividades de las parroquias.
Para la celebración del aniversario 75 de nuestra diócesis, elegimos el lema – “Cristo ayer, hoy y por siempre.” Esta cita de la Escritura es un recordatorio de que el mismo Jesús que ha caminado con nosotros en el pasado nos sostiene hoy, y también estará guiándonos y protegiéndonos en los días por venir. Que su fe siempre infunda en ustedes la paz interna y alegría de experimentar la presencia del Señor en sus vidas, todo el tiempo y no importa donde estén.
Por supuesto, sus años de educación católica no habrían sido posible si no fuera por sus padres. Por favor únanse a mí para agradecerles, junto con sus parroquias, por hacer el compromiso y los sacrificios para ayudar a proveerles a ustedes de una educación católica. También quiero expresar mi gratitud a sus sacerdotes, el cuerpo docente y el personal de sus escuelas por trabajar tan duro para cumplir con la misión de sus escuelas de formarlos y educarlos como discípulos de Jesucristo.
Entonces, queridos graduados, espero que sus clases se destaquen, no porque se gradúan en el año de una pandemia mundial, sino por el impacto que ustedes logren como fieles y comprometidos discípulos de Jesucristo, infundiendo al mundo con su presencia a través de sus palabras y acciones, haciendo de cualquier lugar en donde estén un lugar mejor porque ustedes han derramado la luz del Evangelio allí.
Es mi oración que, a través de la intercesión de María, la Madre de Dios, patrona de nuestra diócesis, el Señor Jesús continuará concediéndoles cada gracia y buen regalo que ustedes necesiten para vivir vidas cristianas plenas y con sentido al andar como sus discípulos en este mundo.
