‘Remember that you are dust…’

Father Alex Zenthoefer, rector of St. Benedict Cathedral and diocesan Vicar General, distributes ashes to Deacon Dave Rice Feb. 14, Ash Wednesday, during the 9 a.m. Mass at St. Benedict Cathedral in Evansville. In the photo below, Father Alex and Deacon Dave distribute ashes to students of St. Benedict Cathedral School. Ash Wednesday begins the annual observance of Lent.

“Lent is a word that means springtime,” Father Alex said. “So this season is all about coming to new life. It’s about this experience of really digging deep and asking the Lord to really bring about new life in all of our lives. … I think there’s something in all of us, as human beings, that recognizes the need to kind of reset, to kind of eliminate those things in our lives that we know don’t belong, and to kind of reprioritize and fix our eyes on what we’re really made for.”

Lent concludes with the beginning of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on the evening of March 28, Holy Thursday. Easter Sunday is March 31.
