Soup kits and solidarity

Special to The Message

In a powerful act of compassion and collaboration, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) Washington District Council prepared and delivered 2,400 chicken noodle soup kits with sufficient soup to feed 10,000 people in Eastern Kentucky — an area still reeling from the devastating floods and tornadoes that struck earlier this spring.

The initiative began with a simple question: “Where is the need greatest?” After surveying for SVdP food pantries across the region, the Council chose to partner with Catholic Charities of Lexington, Kentucky, whose reach spans 50 counties — 25 of which have been officially declared disaster areas.

Dr. Shellie Gregory, executive director of Catholic Charities Lexington, is working closely with SVdP leaders to ensure the soup kits are distributed where they do the most good. Dr. Gregory is most grateful for the donation. It’s not just about food; it’s about hope, dignity and the reassurance that we’re not alone.

Each kit was thoughtfully assembled to provide not only nourishment but comfort — a warm bowl of soup symbolizing care from one community to another. Nearly 60 Vincentians from the Washington District Council, consisting of the following conferences — Our Lady of Hope, Our Lady of Hope Youth, St. John, St. Joseph and St. Peter — came together in faith and fellowship to pack, transport and deliver the kits, embodying the SVdP mission of serving neighbors in need. This initiative was made possible through the generous financial support of the Our Lady of Hope and St. John Conferences.

This was more than a delivery. It was a message to Eastern Kentucky: We see you, we care and we’re here.

As Eastern Kentucky continues to rebuild, gestures like these remind us that healing often begins with the simplest acts of kindness — and sometimes, with a bowl of soup.
