Gratitude for the Gift of Faith
“My children, I am writing this to you so that you may not commit sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous one” (1 John 2:1).
The apostle John addresses the early Christians with a strong message about avoiding sin. He tells them there is a distinction between those who abide by the teachings of Jesus and obey his commandments, and those who do not. “Those who say they know Him, but do not keep His commandments are liars, and the truth is not in them” (1 John 2:4).
How can you know Jesus more deeply in your own life? The division created in our relationships by differences in ideology is challenging. John also tells us, “Jesus is expiation for our sins, and not for our sins only, but for the whole world.”
Is it difficult to find time in your life to be perfected in Jesus? The world offers many distractions. Pope Benedict XVI wrote about the liberation of the Resurrection and tells us; “Jesus lives so we may live eternally. He is perpetually present to us ... the Risen Lord does not remain alone; He draws all men to Himself.”
Spring is an eventful time of year. We recently focused on the Lenten Season and the discipline needed to fully participate in Holy Week and the joy of Easter. We also engaged in the fascination of March Madness, the gift of Divine Mercy Sunday and the excitement of the 2024 eclipse. The presence of God is evident in all things, but there are times when we miss the beauty. Please remain attentive — Pentecost is coming soon!
We celebrate the Easter flame until the Feast of Pentecost on May 19. The revelation of power given to the disciples in the Upper Room continues for us. It is our responsibility as believers to pray for the gifts of the Spirit and trust God in all matters. Jesus taught us everything we need to know, and we have the ability to use the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Our faith is the victory that conquers the world today!
The omnipotent power of God was observed in the totality of the eclipse. The visual of light and darkness, the heat of the sun that sustains the earth, and the lack of warmth without the light were incredible. There really is a purpose for everything under the heaven — and there is also an unrepeatable person created with a calling to building up the kingdom of God. The dignity and protection of human life is in grave danger in our culture. The lack of respect and understanding is astounding — our voice is so important! In a healthy society it is fundamental to have conversation about God’s plan for marriage, family and life!
I asked my 10-year-old grandson what the Holy Spirit meant to him. He quickly responded, “The Holy Spirit is everything because He gives us the grace we need to make good decisions and not sin.” I could not think of a more compelling statement! It is essential for us to teach our children to know and love Jesus. A community of believers makes a tremendous difference in the formation of faith for each precious soul, but the blessing of this responsibility begins at home. Our son asked his preschool-age daughter if she wanted to pray a decade of the rosary before bed. She replied, “Oh yes, because my teacher, Mrs. Cindy, says “prayering” is the most important thing we can do!” God bless the righteous! Amen!
