Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
These last few weeks of this Lent have been like none other. When we made our Ash Wednesday commitments to increased prayer, fasting and charity, we never imagined that these sacrifices would be intensified by the suspension of public Masses, sheltering at home, social distancing, shut down of businesses and workplaces, and especially the ongoing reports of the sickness and death that follow in the wake of the coronavirus. Yet,
even as we walk through this dark valley of uncertainty, fear and illness, the Risen Lord is beside us, as He was with the disciples that first Easter.
“Peace be with you” were Jesus’ first words to His apostles after His resurrection. Coming into their midst in the Upper Room that Easter night, the Risen Lord reassured His frightened and grief-stricken friends that He was truly alive, and then He breathed on them new life of the Holy Spirit. Jesus’ gift of peace would sustain these men through the struggles, persecutions and even martyrdom that awaited them as they set out to tell the whole world the Good News of our salvation in Jesus’ death and resurrection.
The peace of the Risen Christ given to the apostles was bestowed on us at our baptism. It is this gift of the Lord Jesus, breathed into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, which enables us to face the crosses and difficulties that are part of our lives. The peace and joy of Easter are meant to fill our hearts each day and give us hope and confidence that we are never alone, no matter what happens in our lives or in the world around us. As you join at home in Easter Mass and celebrate this great feast in whatever way is safely possible, I hope
and pray that you will be renewed in the Spirit and open to Jesus’ gift of peace.

Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,
Estas últimas pocas semanas de esta Cuaresma han sido como ninguna otra. Cuando hicimos nuestros compromisos del Miércoles de Ceniza para incrementar la oración, el ayuno y la caridad, nosotros nunca imaginamos que estos sacrificios serían intensificados por la suspensión de Misas públicas, la toma de refugio en el hogar, la distancia social, el cierre de negocios y lugares de trabajo, y especialmente los continuos reportes de
enfermedad y muerte hechos a raíz del coronavirus. Aún así, al caminar a través de este valle oscuro de incertidumbre, miedo y enfermedad, el Señor Resucitado está junto a nosotros, así como Él estuvo con los discípulos en esa primera Pascua.
“Que la paz sea contigo” fueron las primeras palabras de Jesús a Sus apóstoles después de Su resurrección. Llegando en medio de ellos en el Cuarto de Arriba esa noche de Pascua, el Señor Resucitado les aseguró a Sus atemorizados y desconsolados amigos que Él estaba verdaderamente vivo, y entonces Él les sopló a ellos una nueva vida del Espíritu Santo. El regalo de paz de Jesús sostendría a estos hombres en la lucha, persecuciones y hasta el martirio que les esperaba al dar a conocer a todo el mundo la Buena Nueva de nuestra salvación en la muerte y resurrección de Jesús.
La paz del Cristo Resucitado dada a los apóstoles nos fue concedida en nuestro bautismo. Es este regalo del Señor Jesús, soplado en nuestros corazones por el Espíritu Santo, lo que nos permite encarar las cruces y dificultades que son parte de nuestras vidas. La paz y la alegría de Pascua tienen como objetivo llenar nuestros corazones cada día y darnos esperanza y confianza de que nunca estamos solos, no importa lo que suceda en nuestras vidas o en el mundo a nuestro alrededor. Al unirse en sus hogares en la Misa de Pascua y celebrar esta gran fiesta de una manera lo mas segura posible, yo espero y oro para que tú estés renovado en el Espíritu y abierto al regalo de paz de Jesús.
