On April 29, Caryn Brummett, a fifth-grade teacher at Washington Catholic Middle School in Washington, was named the April St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Outstanding Educator by the Diocese of Evansville Catholic Schools Office. Brummett was surprised by Diocesan Superintendent Michelle Priar, Associate Superintendent Kari Ford and School Support Administrator Lynde Anquillare, who presented her with a certificate and a small gift.
Brummett is the eighth educator to receive the award since its inception in 2023. She’s in her 34th year of teaching for the diocese. Brummett is a Washington Catholic alum, and one of her nominators called her a “cornerstone teacher at Washington Catholic.”
The nominator said, “I trust and value her opinions and decisions. … Caryn is also the teacher mentor in my building, and I am not sure that I trust anyone else with this responsibility. … I know they are in great hands with Caryn!”
Another nominator said Brummett is a “positive influence in and out of the classroom.”
“With students, Mrs. Brummett is always pushing them to be better. … When our girls basketball team was in jeopardy of ending because we couldn't find a consistent coach, Mrs. Brummett stepped up, along with our principal, to save the program.”
Each month, deserving teachers are nominated by their colleagues, and a committee selects one winner. All teachers in the diocese are eligible to receive the award, which will begin again in the 2024-25 school year.
