Resurrection School students in grades 5-8 presented 200 port pillows and $1,000 to Chemo Buddies founder Jill Kincaid on Feb. 3. Also at the presentation was cancer survivor Janice Pugh, founder of Student Buddies Emma Duggar and President of the Board of Directors Susie Gates. In October, students collected donations during a “Change for a Change” campaign to help fund the project. They designed port pillows using thread and fabric markers to draw pictures and write messages of love and hope, while parent-volunteers helped sew the pillows together. Port pillows help cancer patients going through chemotherapy treatments protect their port-a-cath, or port, which is placed beneath the skin so cancer patients can receive treatments. A port pillow is placed between the shoulder and a seatbelt to shield it from irritation.
