Christmas 2019

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

At the heart of it all, Christmas never really changes. While many traditions have been added over the centuries, the essence of Christmas remains the same.  We celebrate that the Son of God, the Eternal Word, became man. Almighty God came to live among us in the tiny infant Jesus, born in a stable, surrounded only by His Virgin Mother and foster father.

What the world calls the "magic" of Christmas, we know as "love.” It is the Love of God come down to earth, enfleshed in the Christ Child, born of the Blessed Virgin. Jesus is both the Son of God and the Son of Mary. He is, therefore, the one who links divinity with humanity. As true God, He has the power to save us from our sins. As true man, He could express His tremendous love by dying on the cross for our salvation.  This Child who is born to us, this Son who is given to us, is the great mediator between God and man. He knows our joys and our struggles, our loves as well as our sorrows. Our God is truly Emmanuel ~ God with us!

Along with the Shepherds who journeyed to the stable so long ago, we have made a spiritual journey this Advent; and hopefully, all of us have encountered the Christ Child in our hearts and homes. A devout and sincere practice of our Catholic Faith – Mass each week, regular Confession, daily prayer and reading of Scripture, providing for the needs of the less fortunate – helps us prepare in our souls a proper resting place for our Savior on Christmas and every day of our lives.

On behalf of our entire diocesan staff, I extend to you and your families our prayers and best wishes for a happy and holy Christmas.  I pray that in this 75th Jubilee year of our diocese, the Love of God, born for us in the silence of that night in Bethlehem, may bless you and those you love.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Rev. Joseph M. Siegel

Navidad 2019
