Beloved in Christ,

In the familiar story of Christ’s birth from the Gospel of St. Luke, the angel proclaims to the shepherds that the Christ Child in the manger is to be a sign to us (Lk 2:12).  He is a sign of God’s faithfulness, sending the Messiah long promised by the prophets. He is a sign that God has sanctified human life by becoming one of us in Jesus. He is a sign that we never have anything to fear, for God is with us, Emmanuel, now and always.

Into the poverty of a stable and into the fragility of human life, a Savior is born for us, wrapped in simple blankets and laid in a trough full of hay. Into the poverty and fragility of our lives, Jesus is born for us to bestow His courage, joy and new hope. Into the poverty of a world of violence, division and injustice, Jesus is born anew to bring peace, harmony and love. Into the fragility of sickness, grief, anxiety and sin, He comes to minister healing, security and forgiveness.

The presence and power of God may not always appear obvious to us, but He is always with us and at work in our world and our lives. This Feast of Christmas invites us to renew our trust that God is with us in Jesus, at all times and in all places, dwelling within the crib of our hearts. Yet for the Incarnation to be complete, we must bring Christ to birth in our world by making His presence and influence felt by all those whose lives we touch, not just during this holiday season, but every day of the year.

As we gaze upon the Nativity scenes in our homes and in our church and reflect on the Christmas story, let us recall with devotion that the same Christ who was born in Bethlehem is with us here and now, in the Eucharist, the Sacraments, the Scriptures, our prayer and in each other.  This is what we celebrate in a special way in our Masses on Christmas and throughout the Christmas season.

As I celebrate Christmas Mass, I will pray that the Lord will bless each of you with renewed faith and hope as we recall the tremendous love of God, revealed in the Child born for us in Bethlehem and who continues to be born in our hearts today.

On behalf of Bishop Gettelfinger and the entire Diocesan Staff, I wish you and your loved ones a blessed Christmas and a joyous and healthy New Year.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Rev. Joseph M. Siegel

Bishop

Obispo
