Catholic school students excel academically despite pandemic

By Dr. Daryl Hagan, Superintendent of Schools

On July 14, the Indiana State Board of Education meeting marked the annual release of ISTEP+ and ILEARN results for Hoosier students. I agree with Dr. Katie Jenner, Secretary of Education, when she recently stated, “I want to preface my note to you today by emphasizing that students are so much more than a single data point. As educators, we’re focused on helping students build the foundational knowledge and skills each year to set them on a path towards maximum success (and options) for their future...whether they pursue employment, enlistment, or enrollment.” We understand the pandemic affected all of our students. Despite the challenges, Catholic schools stayed committed to the mission of forming Disciples of Christ while providing a quality education.

When reviewing the results of the summative assessment we have much to celebrate while understanding we also have continued areas for growth for each student we serve. For the purpose of this article, I want to highlight a few areas where students excelled during the 2020-2021 school year.
